This, combined with a very porous micro-structure, gives it a huge surface area that is available to both inter-react with the water and provide a home for large colonies of essential bacteria. This stone has a continuous effect on the water in the aquarium. It releases trace elements and minerals into solution or absorbs them from solution, depending on the surrounding water conditions. This creates a stable, near perfectly buffered mineral balance in the aquarium. It also gradually locks up and permanently removes traces of contaminants in the water.
